August 2009: 1LT Paul Greive, with the 50th MiTT, USMC, of Seattle,
WA and SGT Chris Olsen, from B CO, 1-77 AR, US Army, of Cordova,
NE meet at Camp Wessim in SE Iraq.
Good teachers
hope that they impact their students’ lives in such a way
that they eventually go on to surpass the teacher in some way.
For former high school teacher Sgt Chris Olsen, that way was being
outranked.
Olsen taught
five years of high school in Seattle, WA and Omaha, NE before
deciding to give more to his country by serving an enlistment
in the Army. Originally from Cordova, NE, he now serves as Operations
NCO for B Company, 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment.
The former
student, 1LT Paul Grieve of Seattle, WA was Olsen’s student
during his Junior and Senior years of high school.
B company
was detached from their parent battalion to support several MiTT
teams in and around Basra, Iraq. Olsen discovered that his former
student was a part of one of the MiTTs they were working with.
“He
hated it the first time I called him, ‘Sir’,”
Olsen quipped. “He threatened to call me, ‘Mr. Olsen.’”
